Turtles evolved before mammals, birds,crocadials,snakes,and lizards.Lots of kinds of turtles live to be over 100 years old,if you think about that, that is a lot of time.Most cats and dogs live forabout 15 years, those kinds of turtles live a lot longer then those kinds of pets.Also, some humams live for less than that time.Turtles will live in any climate that they can do their breeding cycle.Turtles range from 4 inches to 1,500 pounds,imagine that!Turtles shells are made aut of 60 different bones, if their shell breakes,they will break a lot of bones. Most turtles have five toes on each foot,but some American box turtles only have 3 or 4 toes per foot, I think that's weard. Turtles have been one of the longest species alive, and they are some of the longest living animals alive today!!!!!
Here are some things that I already knew about turtles. First, I know that turtles shells have little sections in their shells that come off like shedding fur on a cat, that is how their shells grow. When turtles lay out on a log or rock, it is called basking.
When they bask in the sun, they are drying off. If you touch a turtle, you need too wash your hands. Why? Because turtles spread salmonilla and that is a food poisoning, so if you don't wash your hands right after you touch turtles, it is likly that you will get sick.Those are some things that I know about turtles.
Turtles are great household pets!Here are some tips on how to take care of them. First, you need to have the tank near a sink. This is because, as I have said, turtles spred salmanilla, so having a sink nearby will help get your hands clean faster after touching the turtles.
That doesn't mean that you need to have a sink in the same room as your turtles. For instince, I have turtles in my room and there is a bathroom next to my room that I can quickly run through the hallway and get to if my hands have the turtle water on them. Another thing that you need to do in order to take care
of them is that you need to clean the filter every week. When you clean it, you take the filter, run it under hot water on both sides until it is cleaner, and then put it back the way it fits. Another thing you can do is take them out of the tank for a while and let them "run around" with your supervision. One way you can make sure that they are healthy is
by feeding them two meals a day. You can feed them small bits of lettuce for a treat.
