Happy New Year! It will take some time to get used to writing 2017. The New Year brings about excitement because of all the possibilities that lie ahead.
In math, we are working on Chapter 4: Dividing by 1-Digit Numbers. Students will use remainders to solve division problems, divide tens, hundreds, and thousands by whole numbers through 10, and use compatible numbers to estimate quotients. Students will learn a variety of strategies to divide such as using the distributive property, repeated subtraction and multiples, as well as partial quotients. Students will also use base-ten blocks to model division and regrouping, and place-value to determine where to place the first digit in a quotient. In the last two lessons of the chapter students will divide multi-digit numbers by 1-digit divisors and solve problems using the strategy draw a diagram. At the end of the chapter, we will take a second learning target that covers concepts from chapter 2, 3, and 4- Multiplication & Division. Please continue studying basic multiplication and division facts. Next we will move onto Chapter 5: Factors and Multiples. This is a short chapter with six lessons. Some of the topics we will be covering are modeling factors, factors and divisibility, problem solving with common factors, prime and composite numbers, and number patterns.
