This marking period in Literacy, students are engaging in historical fiction book clubs. A book club is a group of people who are reading the same book and who meet together to discuss what they've read. In our class, students are meeting with their book clubs multiple times a week and are discussing important events, characters, historical timelines, theme, and a plethora of other topics. Students are also working on their writing about reading. Some different methods students use are = graphic organizers, sketches with explanations, write-longs, or text code/explanations on post-it notes. Students use this writing about reading to spark conversation in their club meetings.

In addition to book clubs, we are continuing our study of opinion writing. Students are reading opinion articles, debates, and essays. Additionally, they are practicing how to come up with proper evidence that supports reasons and a thesis statement.

Social Studies:
 Our new unit will focus on exploration to early statehood. Students will learn about Europeans arriving to North America in the 1600's, what New Jersey was like as a colony, the American Revolution, the Constitution, and finally, new inventions and growth in the early 1800's.
