Literacy: We have rolled out the red carpet for a new unit on nonfiction reading. This month in school, most of our reading time will be spent reading a variety of self-chosen, high-interest non-fiction texts. The students will learn strategies to read nonfiction well such as making connections and previewing the text for text features. We have discussed the importance of continuing to read fiction on the side – please encourage this at home!

In writing, your child will transition from the world of fiction to the exhilarating and challenging world of opinion/persuasive essays! As an essayist, your child will continue to grow his or her writing toolbox with new skills and techniques. Students will learn strategies for introducing their topics, coming up with a clear t s, providing reasons to support their thesis, and using evidence to support their reasons.

Social Studies:
We will switch gears from map skills to learning about New Jersey. Students will learn about the four natural regions, landforms and bodies of water found in these regions, natural resources, and the first settlers of N.J. The students will be using laptops and books to conduct research for a brochure project. The brochure project will be highlighting one region and will include facts about that region.
