The first Unit of Study in reading this year aims to launch students back into what matter most: for students to be nose-in-the book readers.  Students will be challenged to read a text with deep engagement and intensity.  Students have been going to the structures, routines, and habits of a richly literate reading workshop.  They have been taking responsibility for keeping tack of the reading they do.
In the Unit of Study in Writing, students are learning ways to live like writers, seeing ideas for fiction stories everywhere.  At the start of the unit, we let students know that fiction writers get ideas by paying attention to the moments and issues in their lives.  Children collect stories ideas in their Writer's Notebooks, learning to flesh the ideas out a bit so that they contain some of the elements of an effective story.
In Social Studies, we learned geography skills.  Students learned and practiced some geography skills using maps, globes, and graph.  Please remember we alternate for Science during each mid-marking period.
