Dear 4th Grader and Parents,

Welcome to Martin Luther King School! I’m so happy you are in my class and am excited about the opportunity to get to know you.  I’m looking forward to a happy and productive school year.  Before I tell you a bit about the fourth grade, let me introduce myself! My name is Ms. McCarthy and I have been teaching for 20 years. I have experienced numerous grade levels here in Piscataway, but I’m proud to say that I’ve been teaching at the 4th/5th grade level for 16 years!

I hope you are as excited as I am for the school year to begin because this will be a fun and productive year of learning!  Throughout the year, we will strengthen and expand our skills as mathematical problem-solvers as we tackle new concepts and challenges in math!   Get ready to stretch your math skills as we delve even more deeply into place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and more! We’ll also be experimenting in science and creating projects involving topics such as systems, energy and weather.  These are just a few of the interesting and captivating experiences awaiting you in the year ahead!

In preparation for a successful year, I ask that you refer to the supplies checklist on our school website, under the parent center tab and bring those materials into school on the first day of school, September 4th. If in addition to those supplies, you could also please supply:

  • One box of colored pencils

  • One roll of scotch tape

I would also like you to bring two additional items on the first day – your favorite summer reading book and an artifact that stands to symbolize an interesting or fun summer memory. This will provide us with the opportunity to exchange ideas about the wonderful books we’ve read over the summer!  This will also help us to enjoy get acquainted with new friends and reacquainted with old friends.

Most importantly, please remember to bring your enthusiasm for learning, a positive attitude, sense of humor, caring heart and willingness to work hard.  With these qualities in place, we can accomplish fantastic feats in fourth grade!  I can’t wait to get started!

If you have any questions before school, visit my website on or email me at  Enjoy the rest of your summer vacation!
